It is best to start approximately 2 mlbs/h steam into the coking drum a few minutes prior to making the drum switch. This steam ensures that the feed line does not plug and also helps to keep the viens open in the drum so that the water quench can better infiltrate and cool the drum during the quench cycle. Be careful not to inject too much quench steam initially if the drums are prone to foaming.
