I have observed this phenomenon in a fractionator tower such as you describe. It was being caused intermittently by excess HCGO level spilling over into the bottom of the tower. This HCGO was about 650 F, which caused the feed in the tower bottoms at 500 F to rapidly increase. It may also be that your tower bottom is full of coke, and your liquid level may not be as you expect. Hope this helps.
