BEIJING, Dec. 14, 2009 (Xinhua News Agency) -- Sinopec Group, China's largest oil refiner, announced during the weekend to upgrade its GBII gasoline supplied in 12 provinces and municipalities in China to cleaner GBIII gas oline for emission reduction purpose.

According to the announcement, the company is to inaugurate such

gasoline in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Tianjin and other provinces starting from December 31, 2009.

The production of GBIII gasoline will be considerably more expen sive than GBII product, but the price will remain unchanged despite higher production cost of the new standard gasoline, said the company.

China's GBIII gasoline is a national standardized gasoline product. Its sulfur content is about 150ppm, compared with 500ppm sulfur figure in GBII gasoline.

Given that all GBII gasoline in use was replaced by GBIII product in China, the sulfur emission will be reduced by some 23,000 tons annually, said Sinopec Group announcement. Sinopec Group is the parent company of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation.
