A consortium of LG International and Hyundai Engineering has won a US$1.48 billion order to build a gas plant in Turkmenistan, the largest gas producer in Central Asia.

An LG International spokesman said Tuesday, "The consortium signed a contract to build a natural gas plant with the state-run gas company of Turkmenistan."

The plant, which will remove sulfur from natural gas, will be built in Yoloten in the southeastern region of the country. The largest in Turkmenistan's history, the project is scheduled to begin in January with a view to completion in 2012.

The Korean companies will take charge of the entire process, from designing to purchasing materials and to construction.
